Seventh installment

They came over to me and pointed at the clothes and bergan, I assumed that they wanted me to pack them all away so I did just that and then just closed it, I retrieved my passport and followed the police out of the bar. All three of them were armed with pistols and AK47s. Wherever they were taking me it had to be safer than staying in that bar and I was overjoyed to see the bar and the people outside it dissapearing as I looked through the rear window of the car. Up ahead I saw a sign at what looked like a town, it said "Bachka Topola" the driver was badly in need of some driving lessons and I hoped that where ever they were taking me was not far away as I didn't want to end up in hospital before I had even arrived at my destination, as I was thinking this we turned off the road and parked beside a very large building, we all got out and I took my bergan from the boot of the car and they led me up some steps into the building.
Inside I was shown to a seat and told to sit while one of the police men spoke to a man behind a counter he was obviously a man in charge. The waiting was driving me nuts, I had been there for about an hour without anyone telling me what was going on, all of a sudden one of the policemen gestured me to follow him and he led me to a room where I was again told to sit down and wait. Before long a short man entered opposite me at the desk, he said nothing, all he did was write. After a short time he looked at me and in perfect English told me to empty my bergan,
"excuse me, could you please tell me what is going on" I asked as politely as I could possibly be, no reply,
"ignorent commie bastard" I muttered to myself.
Another man came in and also sat opposite me at the table, they emptied everything from my bergan on the table and looked through it, the only items that they were interested in were my compass, map, knives, survival kit and torches, they wrote all these down on a piece of paper and told me to pack everything away. They then told me to empty my pockets and remove my clothes, what did they think I was a drug smuggler or were they just gay, they checked all the clothes that I had been wearing and then searched me, whatever they were looking for they didn't find it, I was told to get dressed and sit back down so I did, they then informed me that I was going to be kept overnight, at least I was going to have a couple of hours sleep as I knew from passed experience what prisons were like, no charges just detained for further questioing. The next morning I was woken and shown were the showers were then back to the same room as the day before they told me that I was to stay at the hotel opposite under house arrest(at least in a hotel) until someone came for me, I was given clean clothes and my shaving kit, the English speaking policeman took me accross the road and into a hotel, he booked me in and checked to see if I had enough money to pay for the room, he didn't give me my passport back but just showed it to the receptionist and then put it in his pocket and told me he would return. Well I was stuck in the middle of nowhere, no passport and running low on money what a situation to be in. By now it was about nine and I was starving so I went into the restaurant and sat down, there were quite a few people there and they were all looking at me as if I was from another planet, I was glad when the waiter arrived and told him that I wanted something to eat, off he went without answering and returned with cutlery, napkin and pointed at the empty glass, I assumed that he wanted to know if I needed something to drink so I said "beer" and off he went. I didn't care what he brought me to eat because I was so hungry that anything would do. He brought me some sort of meat, chips and salad, I didn't know what sort of meat but I was so hungry I ate it, what to do next, no passport, low on money and under so called house arrest, so I decided to go back to my room and wait. What to do, in the end I was so tired that I lay down and slept as I was so tired walked for miles, almost started a riot, strip searched like a smuggler, house arrest, as I slowly dropped off to sleep I wondered what tomorrow would bring as much fun as today or worse.

Ninth installment

The remains of the unit that were in this position left and we followed them, we went around the outskirts of the village and back into the center. The rest of PIV or what was left of it were already there, we found out that Colin just after he had reached the main hq in the center of the village. We had to go back to the end of the street to see what was happening but as soon as we arrived we came under heavy fire as the enemy had pinpointed this house as our new front line, there was no way that we could reach Eric without getting everyone who attempted a rescue killed and because of the amount of enemy fire we had to fall back, on the way Alan started going berserk saying that he had to go back to fight, he was shooting everywhere so George calmed him down and asked him to take care of the elderly and that seemed to work. By now the village command had decided it was time to leave but first we had to wait for the mortar unit to reach safety. We could not get anywhere near under cons...

Third installment

Day in, day out, it was the same routine, sleep, guard, fire off a few rounds in the general direction of the enemy, there was not much else to do, the main thing was to stay alive by keeping inside every time mortars or artillery came flying in to the village. The only time that there was a lot of activitie was when we were buzzed by planes, everybody would rush outside, Ernie would jump on the transporter and fire the machine gun, I used to run to the machine gun that was mounted on a tripod at the end of the street and also fire at the plane, everybody else would be outside firing their ak47s, there was not much chance of hitting it or bringing it down but it took only one lucky shot and that would give everyone hope. After the plane had gone out of sight that the transporter was Ernies because he had shot at the enemy leaving the damaged transporter with a sniper rifle, so Geordi the commander in charge of the defense of Osijek had given it to Ernie, I also found out that he worked...

The word money has a way of working it's way into every aspect of life and my little crusade was not exempt, how much did I need to get to Croatia, how much did I need to survive on the way, it all had to be taken into account and most where and how I was going to get the money from that I needed. By inquiring at travel agents I found out that I could fly but only as far as Austria, Italy or Hungary but the price was much too expensive for me. Taking the train to any of these countries was also far too expensive, the cheapest way was by bus but the only problem was that it took so long to reach your destination. The bus that I wanted to take went from London and it's destination was Athens in Greece, it normally went through Yugoslavia but because of the war it was not going through Budapest then down into Belgrade before going onto Greece. This was the cheapest way to go and after further inquiries I found out the times and price of the bus, now all I had to do was get the mon...
