Second installment

There were only seven of us in the beginning and transport was our biggest problem, the unit was now growing and the only way to get cars or lorries was to steal or acquire them and the best people to go to were Serbians. One day we decided to go to the outskirts of Osijek, to the mainly Serbian villages that were scattered around the city, although we had asked the local command for vehicles they had refused telling us that they didn't have enough to go around and that we would have to wait but that was not an option as we needed transport now so we took matters into our own hands. The only way was to acquire them so weapons ready just incase of trouble from the local Serbs, as Ernie was loading his skorpian he lost control of the car and we swerved into the trees along side the road. The right wing was dented, wing mirror smashed and a part of the tree stuck in the front bumper but we carried on,
"I don't mind getting shot but to die in a car crash was something that I did not fancy" I said,
"there's no problem" came Ernies reply.
We went through various villages, going slowly to see if there was anything that we needed, there was a Escort parked outside a bar so we decided to take a look, George went in, Alan and I waited by the door and Ernie hung around our car. The owner came out and George asked for his documents, if he had a sebian surname then we would have commandeered his car but he was Croatian, no luck here. Once again we continued on to another village where we spotted a Lada, the same routine, this time we were in luck he was Serbian, he came out and took out everything that belonged to him with us carefully checking for weapons, he gave us the keys and documents and I took the car while the others in the other car and off we drove. A little further up the street we saw a Mercedes and decided to try for this one as well, the owner came out and from his documents we learnt that he was a police officer who was meditating with the locals over something or other, so obviously we could not take his car. We thought that because we had acquired one it was time to quit and head for home. The next day we were in the barracks when the same police officer arrived and caused quite a stir, the owner of the Lada had gone to him demanding his Lada back and because the officer was on a sort of peace keeping mission we had to return it, reluctantly and after a heated argument about we were Croats and he was serb we ended up giving him the car back, now we were back to the one a bit smashed up but driveable car, we would have to find another way to get transport.
All the time we were getting more and more of the items that we needed apart from ammunition and transport but that changed as one evening a man from a house across the road came to one of our guards and told him that he had an ammunition dump in his basement and didn't know what to do with it, we knew exactly what to do with it so after checking for trip wires etc we found boxes and boxes of everything from bullets to rockets, for us it was like an Aladins cave and also as a bonus explosives. We took everything that we wanted back to our unit and told the local command what we had found but not that we had taken a large quantity for ourselves. They didn't know what was there so why tell them, they would only want it all and we needed it more than them.

Ninth installment

The remains of the unit that were in this position left and we followed them, we went around the outskirts of the village and back into the center. The rest of PIV or what was left of it were already there, we found out that Colin just after he had reached the main hq in the center of the village. We had to go back to the end of the street to see what was happening but as soon as we arrived we came under heavy fire as the enemy had pinpointed this house as our new front line, there was no way that we could reach Eric without getting everyone who attempted a rescue killed and because of the amount of enemy fire we had to fall back, on the way Alan started going berserk saying that he had to go back to fight, he was shooting everywhere so George calmed him down and asked him to take care of the elderly and that seemed to work. By now the village command had decided it was time to leave but first we had to wait for the mortar unit to reach safety. We could not get anywhere near under cons...

Third installment

Day in, day out, it was the same routine, sleep, guard, fire off a few rounds in the general direction of the enemy, there was not much else to do, the main thing was to stay alive by keeping inside every time mortars or artillery came flying in to the village. The only time that there was a lot of activitie was when we were buzzed by planes, everybody would rush outside, Ernie would jump on the transporter and fire the machine gun, I used to run to the machine gun that was mounted on a tripod at the end of the street and also fire at the plane, everybody else would be outside firing their ak47s, there was not much chance of hitting it or bringing it down but it took only one lucky shot and that would give everyone hope. After the plane had gone out of sight that the transporter was Ernies because he had shot at the enemy leaving the damaged transporter with a sniper rifle, so Geordi the commander in charge of the defense of Osijek had given it to Ernie, I also found out that he worked...

Second installment

The word money has a way of working it's way into every aspect of life and my little crusade was not exempt, how much did I need to get to Croatia, how much did I need to survive on the way, it all had to be taken into account and most where and how I was going to get the money from that I needed. By inquiring at travel agents I found out that I could fly but only as far as Austria, Italy or Hungary but the price was much too expensive for me. Taking the train to any of these countries was also far too expensive, the cheapest way was by bus but the only problem was that it took so long to reach your destination. The bus that I wanted to take went from London and it's destination was Athens in Greece, it normally went through Yugoslavia but because of the war it was not going through Budapest then down into Belgrade before going onto Greece. This was the cheapest way to go and after further inquiries I found out the times and price of the bus, now all I had to do was get the mon...
