The next few weeks were not all plain sailing, we had quite a few problems which needed to be sorted out, our armourer Steve had taken over the job of driver as Colin had fallen from grace after accusing Ernie of stealing, the job of armourer was taken on by one of the American Croatians called Brian, he was quite intelligent even though he didn't have the knowledge but he was Ernies choice so he took on the job. There were also problems with my section especially one of them, his name was Morris, he was of Russian origin and like all Russians he liked to drink, the worst thing was that it didn't matter if he was on duty or not he still drank and one night I had to sort him out as Ernie didn't want to get involved. That afternoon he had gone for a drink and was slightly drunk but as he had slept I thought that he had sobered up but I was mistaken, he was sitting behind the desk and every time someone came into the school he would load his rifle and wave it around recklessly, I knew that I had to do something before someone got hurt, it was then that I decided on the direct approach, I went up to him and before he had chance to pick his rifle up I took it away and then I told him that I wanted him to go and lay down until he was more capable of being on duty after a short time of gentle persuasion he agreed he went to bed without any further problems, that was always the case when I had to reprimand someone for doing wrong and they respected me more than anyone in the base even though I was only guard commander everyone still thought of me as an officer especially as I was the only one that would argue with Ernie. It was comforting to know that the men thought this even if Ernie didn't, he was not as important as he liked to think and he didn't care what his men thought as long as he was still in command. There had been quite a few occasions when we had not agreed and it ended up with us arguing, Ernie knew that I was not the person who would obey his orders if I thought that they were wrong and because of this I was not in his good books longer, I knew it was only a question of time before I was forced out of this unit and to be quite honest I wasn't worried, I had had enough of him and his dictorial rule and after talking to Paula we decided to go on holiday. When I thought the time was right I spoke to Ernie,
"what are the chances of me having a week off to go on holiday" I asked,
"I will have to think about it" he answered.
It was apparent from his attitude that he didn't like the fact that I had a Croatian girlfriend but whatever the reason I was going to have a hard time getting to go on holiday. The next day I pushed him a bit harder by giving him the week when I wanted to go but that didn't seem to make any difference, I would just have to wait. That night Paula told me that a friend of hers would get us some brouchers and the only thing that would really stand in our way apart from Ernie was our lack of money. When I arrived back at the school I lay on my bed thinking how I could get the money and the only way apart from robbing a bank which was to sell my pistol which I had acquired in Zagreb. We would then have money, a date and a destination we were going to go and I wasn't interested in the consequences.
