The next morning I awoke at three thirty as we were to leave at four fifteen and I had to wake everyone up, the majority were already up and getting ready, the drivers had already gone out and started all but one of the lorries, the other would not start. Inside all the men were lined up getting their clothing and equipment checked, the grenades and ammunition were handed out, the Orsa and RPG got their weapons and ammunition, we were ready. The order was given to get into the lorries but they had still not got the other lorry started so we left it as there was no time to lose. We to the RV point where we were to pick up four more men, not everyone would fit in the lorries so we took the four wheel drive as well, eventually we were on our way. We arrived at the front lines at four forty five, there was still a slim chance of getting to our attack position before the sun came up. We got into our sections and headed out from our lines, the mortar team went first, then we all started off, we continued until we reached the first open wood where as planned we split up, the mortar team had only a short distance to go because they needed more time to set up, Kevin's attack team and their backup went across the disused railway and on to their attack point, myself plus our backup went along the left side of the minefield and eventually arrived at our position. We were to set up and await the signal for the off which was an RPG round being fired, when we heard that we were to fire everything that we had. There was no way that I could know how far the others had gone but we arrived without any trouble, we stopped before each man crawled slowly into his position behind the embankment. It was not the most ideal of places as we had no real sight of the targets without actually crawling up and peering over the top which might have given our position away but I for one had to risk it as I was going to expose myself completely on top of the embankment in order to fire the Orsa and I had to know where and how the bunkers were situated, slowly but surely I inched my way to the top and looked over, the first was about three hundred meters away and built into the side of the embankment, it was a perfect target ripe for the killing I would say, the second was partially hidden out of sight hidden by the corner of the woods, after talking quietly we decided to take the easy one out and then fire at the other. We decided to take the one out on the side of the embankment and then at the other, we loaded and waited for the signal, on the far left we had put two machine guns while we were on top in order to fire, I hoped that the element of surprise was still with us. While we waited we listened, we heard the sound of someone chopping wood about firty meters in front of us, it seemed that we were not expected so all we could do was wait. Over the radio came Ernies voice asking if we were in position and ready, we answered affirmatively and I wondered if they were in position or still on their way, we had to just sit tight and wait as had been planned
The remains of the unit that were in this position left and we followed them, we went around the outskirts of the village and back into the center. The rest of PIV or what was left of it were already there, we found out that Colin just after he had reached the main hq in the center of the village. We had to go back to the end of the street to see what was happening but as soon as we arrived we came under heavy fire as the enemy had pinpointed this house as our new front line, there was no way that we could reach Eric without getting everyone who attempted a rescue killed and because of the amount of enemy fire we had to fall back, on the way Alan started going berserk saying that he had to go back to fight, he was shooting everywhere so George calmed him down and asked him to take care of the elderly and that seemed to work. By now the village command had decided it was time to leave but first we had to wait for the mortar unit to reach safety. We could not get anywhere near under cons...
