Second installment

Why, why, these leaders of this country come to the front line and spend some time with the people who are surrering mentally, physically and financially for the past ten months? If they did perhaps they would realise why we as Croats feel so strongly about what is happening. Why, why, won't these leaders come and talk to those on the front line, hear what they think, go to the hospitals and hear what the wounded think, these are the people who matter, these are the people putting their lives at risk daily in order not to let any more of Croatia slip away into the greedy hands of Milosovic. Why, why, should we patiently watch as our towns and cities are pounded by the aggressors, why should we die while not fighting back, these are our homes, we have the right to defend them, we have the right to fight back. Why, why, come and see what we wear, what we drive, what we have to fight with,in order to stop us defending our homeland we are told that we risk going to jail, I am a lot of Croatians would be happy to spend time in jail as long as one less enemy walks on Croatian soil. Does anybody in Zagreb drive around in Ladas painted to look like camouflage vehicles, do they drive old estate cars with a red cross painted on the roof in order to ferry the injured and dying to hospital. We are told by the Government and commanders that everything that we need that is in Zagreb has been sent to us, how true is that, not very true I think. Do those in Zagreb really care about us the people on the front line or is all they care about is world opinion and how not to upset it. We need the help of the world but in Croatia and BiH the remnants of communism are being pushed to one side, hopefully to be forgotten for time eternal. If we in Croatia and BiH leave the communists win we leave them a foothold in Europe, it must not happen, Communism is dead, the power of the people lives. If you have something to say then say it, if you have something to write, write it, you are the people of a new Democratic country you have the right. Write to our president and tell him what is happening around you, teach him and his government what being on the front line is really like, tell them that you don't want to die in your sleep, you don't want to die while walking on free Croatian streets with the ones that you love, you do not want to sit by and watch what you have fought for dissappear in a cloud of dust, I know by writing the truth it risks my career in the army but I believe strongly not to just sit back and watch the things that are happening, I have grown to love you the Croats and if I can't shoot at our enemies then I must write. This is Croatia, this is a free country, I don't want to become a Serbian and neither do I want to stay communist in any way. Teach the government that there is not only democracy in this country, there is also love, this is stronger than any weapon. The love of the people for their country will conquer all, the love of the people will win the war, the love of the people will keep Croatia free.

Ninth installment

The remains of the unit that were in this position left and we followed them, we went around the outskirts of the village and back into the center. The rest of PIV or what was left of it were already there, we found out that Colin just after he had reached the main hq in the center of the village. We had to go back to the end of the street to see what was happening but as soon as we arrived we came under heavy fire as the enemy had pinpointed this house as our new front line, there was no way that we could reach Eric without getting everyone who attempted a rescue killed and because of the amount of enemy fire we had to fall back, on the way Alan started going berserk saying that he had to go back to fight, he was shooting everywhere so George calmed him down and asked him to take care of the elderly and that seemed to work. By now the village command had decided it was time to leave but first we had to wait for the mortar unit to reach safety. We could not get anywhere near under cons...

Third installment

Day in, day out, it was the same routine, sleep, guard, fire off a few rounds in the general direction of the enemy, there was not much else to do, the main thing was to stay alive by keeping inside every time mortars or artillery came flying in to the village. The only time that there was a lot of activitie was when we were buzzed by planes, everybody would rush outside, Ernie would jump on the transporter and fire the machine gun, I used to run to the machine gun that was mounted on a tripod at the end of the street and also fire at the plane, everybody else would be outside firing their ak47s, there was not much chance of hitting it or bringing it down but it took only one lucky shot and that would give everyone hope. After the plane had gone out of sight that the transporter was Ernies because he had shot at the enemy leaving the damaged transporter with a sniper rifle, so Geordi the commander in charge of the defense of Osijek had given it to Ernie, I also found out that he worked...

Second installment

The word money has a way of working it's way into every aspect of life and my little crusade was not exempt, how much did I need to get to Croatia, how much did I need to survive on the way, it all had to be taken into account and most where and how I was going to get the money from that I needed. By inquiring at travel agents I found out that I could fly but only as far as Austria, Italy or Hungary but the price was much too expensive for me. Taking the train to any of these countries was also far too expensive, the cheapest way was by bus but the only problem was that it took so long to reach your destination. The bus that I wanted to take went from London and it's destination was Athens in Greece, it normally went through Yugoslavia but because of the war it was not going through Budapest then down into Belgrade before going onto Greece. This was the cheapest way to go and after further inquiries I found out the times and price of the bus, now all I had to do was get the mon...
